What’s the difference between synthetic dreads and the real thing?
-First and most importantly, synthetic dreads are not made of your own hair. They’re made of synthetic hair, hence the name, and are easily installed with braiding and rubber bands. You can do it yourself, but I recommend you get help from anyone. Synthetic ones are usually both softer and lighter than human hair. And best of all, synthetic dreads can be used over and over again!
Further questions will be answered if you just keep on reading. However, if you can’t find the answers you are seeking; please don’t hesitate to mail me at lilleblack@live.no.
Dreadfalls, what’s that?
-Dread falls are an even more temporary way to wear dreads. Easily told, it’s a bunch of dreads tied onto usually on or two pieces of string or elastic bands. You put your own hair into one or two hair buns, and attach the dreads to these. Adjust, and complete! I’m working on a tutorial with pictures to put here.
SE and DE? What’s this and which do you recommend?
-SE, single ended or single looped dreads has a loop in one end. This is where you start the braid. DE, double enders has no loops and you start the braid from the middle of the dread. With DE, you have one braid and two dreads. I think it’s easier to understand if you see it yourself.
I always make DE unless you specifically ask for something else because I think it’s the best. However, if you have dreadlocks and want to add synthetic dreads to it, you should use SE.
How do I wash them, can I shower as usual?
-I strongly recommend washing your hair less frequently than usual. Once a week is fine, and three times a month is even better. Wet dreads are quite heavy and take some time to dry. You can try to avoid getting the dreads wet and just wet the scalp with a mixture of shampoo and water. Massage lightly and try to don’t mess up the braids, and rinse well. You do not want any soap residues in your hair, it itches very much.
Can I go swimming with dreads installed?
-Yes you can! Just remember the dreads get heavy once wet, and the longer they are the longer they take to dry. I have very little experience with swimming in chemically treated water; please tell me if you think your dreads are affected by this. To swim in lakes or seawater have no effect and will not damage them.
I have dreadlocks and want to wear synthetic ones as well. Is this possible?
-Yes it is! When attaching dreads to dreads, you should use single ended dreads. Just thread your own dread into the loop, and attach with a rubber band. That’s it. Lookie here for the tutorial I made for this.
Do I damage my hair by using synthetic dreads? Is it true you have to shave the whole thing off when you’re tired of it?
-No, you will not damage your hair and the only thing you have to cut when you’re tired of dreads is the rubber bands that attach them to your hair. It takes a little while to unbraid, depending on the length on your own hair, and you will be left with a very amusing afro. Run for the shower (or take a picture and send it to me) and give your hair a nice shampoo or two as well as some conditioner.
HAIR SHEDDING: You have now worn dreads for some time. Let’s say two months. Your head sheds naturally about a 100 hairs a day. When you unbraid your dreads you will find a lot of hair falling from your head, but don’t panic. Use a hairbrush to get it all out.
Can you install the dreads for me?
-I might. Just mail me and ask. I live in the eastern part of Norway (Østfold).
Can I place rush orders? I am very impatient/I need the dreads quickly for whatever reason
-Yes, you can. I take an extra fee which depends on how many orders you want to exceed. I can take finish an order in just a few days, but please consider I may not have the colours you want in stock. Any materials I order take 5-14 days, depending on the manufacturer and the postal service as well as customs.
How do I install it?
-You braid it in and secure with one or more rubber bands. You use two different techniques based on the length of your hair.
- I have short hair.
You can attach dreads to hair down to 3cm/1.5”. If you have very short hair you should order them extra thin. I should put in a tutorial with pictures here. This is best used when your own hair is 3-8cm (1,5-3”) long, but some prefer this method with even longer hair because it’s firmer and a bit easier.
- I have long hair.
For how long can I wear it?
-After 2-3 months of wear your own hair may begin to ravel and dread, so this should be the time to take them out. You can take them out whenever you want, and you can reinstall then just as you like. Snap the rubber bands and unbraid.
My cat attacked my head while wearing your dreads. They’re ruined!
-No wonder your cat tries to attack you when you put dreads on it. However, I can for a small fee repair you ruined dreads and replace the dead ones if you mail me and then send it to me.
I ordered blonde dreads from you some time ago but now I want them red. Can I dye them?
-While dying my own hair I thought about this. I took a platinum colored dread, and tried to dye it brightly red. I left it for over an hour. When I rinsed out the dye I discovered it had NO AFFECT what so ever. I guess it would be possible to dye your own hair while wearing dreads, in any colour, but I can’t guarantee a good result.
I want shorter dreads than what I already have. Can I cut them to a more preferred length?
-While writing this FAQ I thought about this. So, I took the same platinum colored dread and cut it with a scissor. It looks just like it has been cut with a scissor, and it does stay in shape when I carefully ruffles at end. So I guess you could do it, but it looks kind of weird.
heisann.
SvarSlettHmmm for some reason only half the post can be seen. I tried reloading but still same.
